Origin of UAE emirates names

 







The UAE consists of seven emirates, emirate is an Arabic word that means Principality, the governance system in the United Arab Emirates is federal, after it was before the federation, each of the seven emirates forms an independent state, the history of human civilization in the Emirates goes back to very ancient times, in some explorations, it has been proven that civilization in the United Arab Emirates now dates back to thousands of years, perhaps about five thousand years.


The capital of each emirate is a city with the same name, for example, the capital of the Emirate of Sharjah is the city of Sharjah, and so on.

Emirate of Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi as a word means the home of the antelope, because of the large number of antelopes in the emirate, 

the capital of the state, the seat of government, and it is also the capital of the federal union.

It is also the largest UAE emirate by area.

The emirate includes a few cities like Al Ain, the fourth largest city by population, which was named so because of the abundance of fresh water springs in it.







Emirate of Dubai, its old name is Dibba, which has many hypotheses about the reason for the name, including that Dibba was an important trading centre in ancient civilizations or Other stories attributed the name to a strong woman who was able to defend this piece of land and stand up to the bandits in the old days.

It is the most populated city in the UAE.









Emirate of Sharjah, which means the rising sun in the past, the third of the Emirates by population, Sharjah is the capital of culture, it is the only emirate that overlooks the Gulf and the Gulf of Oman and it is also the only emirate that has common borders with all other emirates.



Emirate of Ajman, it was named after the Arab tribes who settled there since ancient times, Ajman is the fourth of the Emirates in population and the smallest emirate by area. 



Emirate of Umm Al Quwain, which means the mother of the two forces. naval and ground force in the past, it is the oldest ancient city in the region.








Emirate of Ras Al-Khaimah, ras in Arabic is a head, al-khaimah is the tent in English, it is called so because there was a queen believed to be queen Al-Zabaa (Zenobia) used to pitch her tent there.


Emirate of Fujairah,  it was named so because the springs erupt in it, as it was called in the past, the land of giants of the sea.

It is one of the most important fuel supply stations in the world.







The names of the main cities in the Emirates, or even their affiliated cities, may seem strange to some, however, these names carry with them stories that express the nobility of the past, along history full of challenges and hard work, the history on which the development that the United Arab Emirates has reached today was built.
